Does a Cingular 8525 PDA/phone require the data plan option for the Wi-fi to work?

I went to the Cingular store today to get a Cingular 8525 PDA/phone combination device which has a Wi-Fi transmitter in it. I was not planning on getting the PDA Connect HSDPA high speed connection package (which is like $45/month extra!), since at office and home I have free Wi-Fi access. Granted, I can’t access my email and internet everywhere without the PDA connect plan add on, I didn’t think it was something I needed. The Cingular rep however said that the Wifi transmitter is disabled unless you get the data connection package with the phone. I was skeptical of this claim, so before I did anything, I wanted to see if there was anyone in the Y! answers community that has had experience with this phone, and whether or not you can connect to Wi-Fi services you have access to without the data plan add on, i.e. with just a standard voice only monthly plan. I hope the Cingular firmware does not disable the Wi-fi on this device so that your forced to buy their rip off data plan! Thanks!

The Cingular Rep was just trying to make a commission (Which it is pretty nice on the unlimited data plan). You do not need to have a data plan in order to use Wi-Fi. You should complain to the store manager about their salespeople’s practices. That is just wrong.
