28 Apr 2010I’m thinking of buying a new camcorder, and the two I’ve been looking at are; HR10 and the HG10. The HR10 saves onto a mini DVD, and the HG10 saves onto a hard drive of 40GB.
Which has best quality and speed etc?

I would recommend getting a camcorder that saves to hard drive rather than DVD. Hard drives have much faster read/write capabilities than DVD’s and you won’t be limited to using discs. What I mean is you can transfer from the hard drive in the camcorder to the hard drive in your computer very fast and then keep recording. If you use DVD’s then you will have more problems when it comes to transferring data to your computer, etc.

Jose Federline is correct – but he’s missing the fact that miniDV tape continues to provide the best available video quality due to least data compression. DV and HDV are much less compressed – resulting in better video quality than other consumer storage media.
If you are married to Canon, the HV20 and HV30…
The AVCHD compression of the HDD, flash memory and DVD camcorders can also be a challenge to work with – what video editor are you planning to use?
