Prepaid Cell Phones and their Restrictions?

In: Cell Phones

22 Apr 2010

Now, I understand that prepaid cell phones allow you to but a certain number of minutes, and then ‘refill’ them when you run out by purchasing a card at places such as pharmacies and the likes, correct? Now, if I am in the US, do these phones allow you to call Canada? And what if I leave the US and wish to call Canada while IN Canada? Is that allowed? And is text messaging allowed as well, and how do they keep track of that?

Virgin Mobile’s prepaid service is just about the best there is IMO. You can call anywhere from anywhere, they only charge you .10 to send text, to receive it is free. They even have 3 different types of prepaid “plans” you choose one depending on how often you use your minutes. If you talk on the phone at least once a day the best one to pick is the one where for .35 a day all your calls are only .10 per min.

For prepaid phones, Virgin Mobile is definitely the best, because they run off of the most powerful network, the Sprint PCS Network. However, it is true that they will cost an arm and a leg, and there will be virtually no chance of calling to or from Canada. The best option for calling TO Canada is a separate wireless long distance carrier. I sell a couple of them, if you’d like information on it then email me at jameswhammons@ yahoo.com

The only problem with a standard postpaid wireless plan is that you have to have a contract. The truth is, however, that if you can fax proof of residence outside of the service area of your provider, after 6 months of service they have to let you out free without termination charges under US laws. So, if you have family that you could “live with” in Canada, you could get out of a contracted plan at any time after 6 months of service if you don’t like it. The advantage of doing it that way is that you won’t have to pay $300 just to get a camera/text phone.

To get set up on a good plan for your use, you can just email me what you want and need and I can find one for you and let you know.
